Embracing bio-individuality

It's no secret that our world is flooded with promises of quick diet fixes. What if we told you that the key to achieving optimal health and well being doesn't lie in any of these?

The truth is, there is no one-size-fits-all approach to nutrition - we are big believers that bio-individuality is the way forward.

Bio-individuality recognises that each person is unique and therefore, there is no perfect way of eating that suits everyone. Instead, it's all about tuning in to your body and finding what works best for you.

Here we've compiled some fundamental tips to help you eat for energy and vitality to help you feel your best.

Crowd in, crowd out: Conventional diets that focus on what you can't eat can be difficult to sustain long term. Instead, try focusing on what you can add to your diet. Crowding in involves adding more healthy foods to your meals, which in turn, will minimise unhealthy foods on your plate. Start by loading up your plate with a variety of vegetables, including leafy greens and in-season vegetables. Eating a rainbow of vegetables at each meal ensures that you're filling up on the most nutrient-dense and antioxidant-rich foods.

Eat mindfully: We often fall into the trap of eating on the run, multitasking while eating, or skipping meals altogether. Eating mindfully involves being present and aware of your food, texture, and taste. Try once a day to turn off devices and sit at the table to enjoy your meal. Take a moment to be grateful for your delicious meal and savour each mouthful. Eating mindfully can bring so much joy and positivity to your day.

Eat what feels good: Not all foods are compatible with our bodies. It's important to become aware of what foods make you feel energised and those that don't. Keep a food diary for a few days, noting what you ate, the time you ate, and how you felt afterwards. Don't label food as "good" or "bad" but instead, reflect on how your body feels. As you become aware, you can make adjustments to your meals that align with your personal bio-individuality.

Balance your plate: Having a balanced plate at each meal is crucial to achieving optimal health. Try whole unrefined grains over refined grains. Incorporate protein-rich foods like beans, nuts, eggs, fish, poultry, and red meat. Include a variety of in-season fruits, and incorporate healthy fats and oils like wild fish, avocados, olive oil, nuts, and seeds.

There's no magic bullet to achieving optimal health and well being, and we get it - we can't be perfect all the time, but listening to your body is the key. By trying out a few of these tips, you'll be on your way to eating for energy, vitality and feeling your best.

Eat for Energy tip: Switching out your regular salad oil for avocado or flax seed oil can be an easy and delicious way to boost your health. Both are rich in heart-healthy fats, as well as vitamins and minerals that can support overall wellness, plus they offer a new flavour and dimension to your meal.
