How to: nourish the nervous system
The nervous system is like the control pad for our bodies, guiding everything from our movements to our thoughts and emotions. For women, understanding and caring for this system is vital for a healthy life. A well-tended nervous system leads to mental clarity, better sleep, and reduced stress.
Studies show that women often experience more stress-related symptoms like headaches, fatigue, and digestive problems. Chronic stress, which affects women more frequently, can harm our nervous systems in the long run. So, how can we nurture our nervous system daily?
Mindful breathing: Focusing on your breath can help calm your nervous system and reduce stress levels. Add this short ritual to your evening routine to unwind and improve your sleep with a simple habit stack of deep breathing exercises before bed – a win-win in our book.
Move often: Exercise can help regulate the nervous system, promoting feelings of calm. Try for 30 minutes of exercise that you personally enjoy in your daily routine – this could be as simple as taking a walk in nature, going for a swim or taking a class.
Sleep deep: Sleep is essential for the nervous system to function properly. Getting eight hours of sleep every night may seem like a lofty goal, but if you can establish a consistent bedtime routine, create a comfortable sleep environment, and avoid stimulants like caffeine and electronics before bed, this can make all the difference.
Eat for energy: A diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean protein can help nourish the nervous system and improve overall health.
Incorporate relaxation techniques: Techniques such as meditation, yoga, and self massage can help promote relaxation and reduce stress levels.
As Dr. Sara Gottfried, a Harvard-trained gynaecologist and hormone expert says: "Caring for your nervous system is an essential part of self care. When your nervous system is calm and balanced, your whole body functions better, and you feel better."
